Reading the tajweed colors

Each color marks a rule on the letters: a nasal sound, a lengthened vowel, a letter that is not pronounced. In a surah, the Word by word view shows the rule of each word.

The most frequent colors

Madd Tabee'ee A long vowel with no hamzah or sukoon after it is held two counts.
Hamzat al-Wasl The joining hamzah (ٱ), at the start of some words: said if you begin on that word, not if you read on.
Ikhfa The nūn is not said clearly: it hides in a nasal sound, held two counts.
Ghunnah On a doubled nūn or mīm, the sound goes through the nose and is held two counts.
Idgham with Ghunnah The nūn merges into the next letter, with a nasal sound held two counts.
Qalqalah With no vowel, five letters do not stay blocked: they give a clear bounce.
Madd Munfasil A long vowel ends a word and a hamzah opens the next: four or five counts.
