Surah Al-Buruj

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 85:1 ▶

   وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ ﴿١﴾

   was-samā'i dhāti l-burūj

   By the sky containing great stars

2. 85:2 ▶

   وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ ﴿٢﴾

   wal-yawmi l-mawʿūd

   And [by] the promised Day

3. 85:3 ▶

   وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ ﴿٣﴾

   washāhidiw wamashhūd

   And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

4. 85:4 ▶

   قُتِلَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ ﴿٤﴾

   qutila 'aṣḥābu l-ukhdūd

   Destroyed [i.e., cursed] were the companions of the trench

   Or "May they be destroyed" or "cursed." The "companions of the trench" (or ditch) were agents of a tyrannical king who refused to allow his people to believe in Allāh. Their evil deed in obedience to their ruler earned for them the curse of Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā).

5. 85:5 ▶

   ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ ﴿٥﴾

   an-nāri dhāti l-waqūd

   [Containing] the fire full of fuel,

6. 85:6 ▶

   إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌ ﴿٦﴾

   idh hum ʿalayhā quʿūd

   When they were sitting near it.

7. 85:7 ▶

   وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌ ﴿٧﴾

   wahum ʿalā mā yafʿalūna bil-mu'minīna shuhūd

   And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.

   After casting the believers into a trench filled with fire, they sat at its edge, watching them burn to death. This event occurred before the time of Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ).

8. 85:8 ▶

   وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ ﴿٨﴾

   wamā naqamū minhum 'illā 'ay yu'minū billāhi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥamīd

   And they resented them not except because they believed in Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

9. 85:9 ▶

   ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ ﴿٩﴾

   alladhī lahū mulku s-samāwāti wal-arḍ | wallāhu ʿalā kulli shay'in shahīd

   To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh, over all things, is Witness.

10. 85:10 ▶

    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ ﴿١٠﴾

    inna lladhīna fatanu l-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti thumma lam yatūbū falahum ʿadhābu jahannama walahum ʿadhābu l-ḥarīq

    Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

    Or, in this instance, the literal meaning of "burned" is also appropriate.

11. 85:11 ▶

    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ ﴿١١﴾

    inna lladhīna 'āmanū waʿamilu ṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum jannātun tajrī min taḥtiha l-anhār | dhālika l-fawzu l-kabīr

    Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.

12. 85:12 ▶

    إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ ﴿١٢﴾

    inna baṭsha rabbika lashadīd

    Indeed, the assault [i.e., vengeance] of your Lord is severe.

13. 85:13 ▶

    إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ ﴿١٣﴾

    innahū huwa yubdi'u wayuʿīd

    Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.

14. 85:14 ▶

    وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ ﴿١٤﴾

    wahuwa l-ghafūru l-wadūd

    And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,

15. 85:15 ▶

    ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ ﴿١٥﴾

    dhu l-ʿarshi l-majīd

    Honorable Owner of the Throne,

16. 85:16 ▶

    فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ ﴿١٦﴾

    faʿʿālul limā yurīd

    Effecter of what He intends.

17. 85:17 ▶

    هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ ﴿١٧﴾

    hal 'atāka ḥadīthu l-junūd

    Has there reached you the story of the soldiers -

18. 85:18 ▶

    فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ ﴿١٨﴾

    firʿawna wathamūd

    [Those of] Pharaoh and Thamūd?

19. 85:19 ▶

    بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍ ﴿١٩﴾

    bali lladhīna kafarū fī takdhīb

    But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,

20. 85:20 ▶

    وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ ﴿٢٠﴾

    wallāhu miw warā'ihim muḥīṭ

    While Allāh encompasses them from behind.

21. 85:21 ▶

    بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ ﴿٢١﴾

    bal huwa qur'ānum majīd

    But this is an honored Qur’ān

22. 85:22 ▶

    فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ ﴿٢٢﴾

    fī lawḥim maḥfūẓ

    [Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate.

In the transliteration, “|”: the reciter stops; “·”: sakt, a brief cut without taking a breath.
