Surah Al-Mutaffifin

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 83:1 ▶

   وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ ﴿١﴾

   waylul lil-muṭaffifīn

   Woe to those who give less [than due],

   i.e., those who cheat people by giving them less than what they paid for when weighing or measuring - an amount so little as to hardly be noticed.

2. 83:2 ▶

   ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ ﴿٢﴾

   alladhīna 'idha ktālū ʿala n-nāsi yastawfūn

   Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.

3. 83:3 ▶

   وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ ﴿٣﴾

   wa'idhā kālūhum 'aw wazanūhum yukhsirūn

   But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.

4. 83:4 ▶

   أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ ﴿٤﴾

   alā yaẓunnu 'ulā'ika 'annahum mabʿūthūn

   Do they not think that they will be resurrected

5. 83:5 ▶

   لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ ﴿٥﴾

   liyawmin ʿaẓīm

   For a tremendous Day -

6. 83:6 ▶

   يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ ﴿٦﴾

   yawma yaqūmu n-nāsu lirabbi l-ʿālamīn

   The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?

7. 83:7 ▶

   كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ ﴿٧﴾

   kallā 'inna kitāba l-fujjāri lafī sijjīn

   No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.

8. 83:8 ▶

   وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ ﴿٨﴾

   wamā 'adrāka mā sijjīn

   And what can make you know what is sijjeen?

9. 83:9 ▶

   كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ ﴿٩﴾

   kitābum marqūm

   It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed.

   The lowest depths of Hell.

10. 83:10 ▶

    وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿١٠﴾

    wayluy yawma'idhil lil-mukadhdhibīn

    Woe, that Day, to the deniers,

11. 83:11 ▶

    ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿١١﴾

    alladhīna yukadhdhibūna biyawmi d-dīn

    Who deny the Day of Recompense.

12. 83:12 ▶

    وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ﴿١٢﴾

    wamā yukadhdhibu bihī 'illā kullu muʿtadin 'athīm

    And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.

13. 83:13 ▶

    إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿١٣﴾

    idhā tutlā ʿalayhi 'āyātunā qāla 'asāṭīru l-awwalīn

    When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

14. 83:14 ▶

    كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ ﴿١٤﴾

    kallā bal · rāna ʿalā qulūbihim mā kānū yaksibūn

    No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.

    i.e., their sins.

15. 83:15 ▶

    كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ ﴿١٥﴾

    kallā 'innahum ʿar rabbihim yawma'idhil lamaḥjūbūn

    No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.

    i.e., they will not be able to see Him.

16. 83:16 ▶

    ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ﴿١٦﴾

    thumma 'innahum laṣālu l-jaḥīm

    Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.

17. 83:17 ▶

    ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿١٧﴾

    thumma yuqālu hādha lladhī kuntum bihī tukadhdhibūn

    Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."

18. 83:18 ▶

    كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ ﴿١٨﴾

    kallā 'inna kitāba l-abrāri lafī ʿilliyyīn

    No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ʿilliyyūn.

19. 83:19 ▶

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ ﴿١٩﴾

    wamā 'adrāka mā ʿilliyyūn

    And what can make you know what is ʿilliyyūn?

20. 83:20 ▶

    كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ ﴿٢٠﴾

    kitābum marqūm

    It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed

    The highest elevations of Paradise.

21. 83:21 ▶

    يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ﴿٢١﴾

    yashhaduhu l-muqarrabūn

    Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allāh].

22. 83:22 ▶

    إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ ﴿٢٢﴾

    inna l-abrāra lafī naʿīm

    Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure

23. 83:23 ▶

    عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ ﴿٢٣﴾

    ʿala l-arā'iki yanẓurūn

    On adorned couches, observing.

24. 83:24 ▶

    تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ﴿٢٤﴾

    taʿrifu fī wujūhihim naḍrata n-naʿīm

    You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.

25. 83:25 ▶

    يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ ﴿٢٥﴾

    yusqawna mir raḥīqim makhtūm

    They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed.

    Which is delicious and does not intoxicate.

26. 83:26 ▶

    خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ ﴿٢٦﴾

    khitāmuhū misk | wafī dhālika falyatanāfasi l-mutanāfisūn

    The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.

    i.e., its lingering odor.

27. 83:27 ▶

    وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ ﴿٢٧﴾

    wamizājuhū min tasnīm

    And its mixture is of Tasneem,

    The highest spring in Paradise and the most favored drink of its inhabitants.

28. 83:28 ▶

    عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ﴿٢٨﴾

    ʿaynay yashrabu biha l-muqarrabūn

    A spring from which those near [to Allāh] drink.

29. 83:29 ▶

    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ ﴿٢٩﴾

    inna lladhīna 'ajramū kānū mina lladhīna 'āmanū yaḍḥakūn

    Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.

30. 83:30 ▶

    وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ ﴿٣٠﴾

    wa'idhā marrū bihim yataghāmazūn

    And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.

31. 83:31 ▶

    وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ ﴿٣١﴾

    wa'idha nqalabū 'ilā 'ahlihimu nqalabū fakihīn

    And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.

32. 83:32 ▶

    وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ ﴿٣٢﴾

    wa'idhā ra'awhum qālū 'inna hā'ulā'i laḍāllūn

    And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."

33. 83:33 ▶

    وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ ﴿٣٣﴾

    wamā 'ursilū ʿalayhim ḥāfiẓīn

    But they had not been sent as guardians over them.

34. 83:34 ▶

    فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ ﴿٣٤﴾

    fal-yawma lladhīna 'āmanū mina l-kuffāri yaḍḥakūn

    So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,

    On the Day of Judgement.

35. 83:35 ▶

    عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ ﴿٣٥﴾

    ʿala l-arā'iki yanẓurūn

    On adorned couches, observing.

36. 83:36 ▶

    هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ ﴿٣٦﴾

    hal thuwwiba l-kuffāru mā kānū yafʿalūn

    Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?

In the transliteration, “|”: the reciter stops; “·”: sakt, a brief cut without taking a breath.
