Al-Baqara

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

لَقُوا۟

laqū

they meet

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

those who

ءَامَنُوا۟

āmanū

believe[d]

قَالُوٓا۟

qālū

they say

ءَامَنَّا

āmannā

We have believed

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

But when

خَلَا

khalā

meet in private

بَعْضُهُمْ

baʿḍuhum

some of them

إِلَىٰ

ilā

with

بَعْضٍۢ

baʿḍin

some (others)

قَالُوٓا۟

qālū

they say

أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم

atuḥaddithūnahum

Do you tell them

بِمَا

bimā

what

فَتَحَ

fataḥa

has

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

عَلَيْكُمْ

ʿalaykum

to you

لِيُحَآجُّوكُم

liyuḥājjūkum

so that they argue with you

بِهِۦ

bihi

therewith

عِندَ

ʿinda

before

رَبِّكُمْ ۚ

rabbikum

your Lord

أَفَلَا

afalā

Then do (you) not

تَعْقِلُونَ

taʿqilūna

understand

أَوَلَا

awalā

Do not

يَعْلَمُونَ

yaʿlamūna

they know

أَنَّ

anna

that

ٱللَّهَ

l-laha

Allah

يَعْلَمُ

yaʿlamu

knows

مَا

mā

what

يُسِرُّونَ

yusirrūna

they conceal

وَمَا

wamā

and what

يُعْلِنُونَ

yuʿ'linūna

they declare

وَمِنْهُمْ

wamin'hum

And among them

أُمِّيُّونَ

ummiyyūna

(are) unlettered ones

لَا

lā

(who) do not

يَعْلَمُونَ

yaʿlamūna

know

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

l-kitāba

the book

إِلَّآ

illā

except

أَمَانِىَّ

amāniyya

wishful thinking

وَإِنْ

wa-in

and not

هُمْ

hum

they

إِلَّا

illā

(do anything) except

يَظُنُّونَ

yaẓunnūna

guess

فَوَيْلٌۭ

fawaylun

So woe

لِّلَّذِينَ

lilladhīna

to those who

يَكْتُبُونَ

yaktubūna

write

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

l-kitāba

the book

بِأَيْدِيهِمْ

bi-aydīhim

with their (own) hands

ثُمَّ

thumma

then

يَقُولُونَ

yaqūlūna

they say

هَـٰذَا

hādhā

This

مِنْ

min

(is)

عِندِ

ʿindi

from

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

Allah

لِيَشْتَرُوا۟

liyashtarū

to barter

بِهِۦ

bihi

with it

ثَمَنًۭا

thamanan

(for) a price

قَلِيلًۭا ۖ

qalīlan

little

فَوَيْلٌۭ

fawaylun

So woe

لَّهُم

lahum

to them

مِّمَّا

mimmā

for what

كَتَبَتْ

katabat

have written

أَيْدِيهِمْ

aydīhim

their hands

وَوَيْلٌۭ

wawaylun

and woe

لَّهُم

lahum

to them

مِّمَّا

mimmā

for what

يَكْسِبُونَ

yaksibūna

they earn

وَقَالُوا۟

waqālū

And they say

لَن

lan

Never

تَمَسَّنَا

tamassanā

will touch us

ٱلنَّارُ

l-nāru

the Fire

إِلَّآ

illā

except

أَيَّامًۭا

ayyāman

(for) days

مَّعْدُودَةًۭ ۚ

maʿdūdatan

numbered

قُلْ

qul

Say

أَتَّخَذْتُمْ

attakhadhtum

Have you taken

عِندَ

ʿinda

from

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

Allah

عَهْدًۭا

ʿahdan

a covenant

فَلَن

falan

so never

يُخْلِفَ

yukh'lifa

will break

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

عَهْدَهُۥٓ ۖ

ʿahdahu

His Covenant

أَمْ

am

Or

تَقُولُونَ

taqūlūna

(do) you say

عَلَى

ʿalā

against

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

Allah

مَا

mā

what

لَا

lā

not

تَعْلَمُونَ

taʿlamūna

you know

بَلَىٰ

balā

Yes

مَن

man

whoever

كَسَبَ

kasaba

earned

سَيِّئَةًۭ

sayyi-atan

evil

وَأَحَـٰطَتْ

wa-aḥāṭat

and surrounded him

بِهِۦ

bihi

with

خَطِيٓـَٔتُهُۥ

khaṭīatuhu

his sins

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

fa-ulāika

[so] those

أَصْحَـٰبُ

aṣḥābu

(are the) companions

ٱلنَّارِ ۖ

l-nāri

(of) the Fire

هُمْ

hum

they

فِيهَا

fīhā

in it

خَـٰلِدُونَ

khālidūna

(will) abide forever

وَٱلَّذِينَ

wa-alladhīna

And those who

ءَامَنُوا۟

āmanū

believed

وَعَمِلُوا۟

waʿamilū

and did

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

l-ṣāliḥāti

righteous deeds

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

ulāika

those

أَصْحَـٰبُ

aṣḥābu

(are the) companions

ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ

l-janati

(of) Paradise

هُمْ

hum

they

فِيهَا

fīhā

in it

خَـٰلِدُونَ

khālidūna

(will) abide forever

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

أَخَذْنَا

akhadhnā

We took

مِيثَـٰقَ

mīthāqa

(the) covenant

بَنِىٓ

banī

(from the) Children

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

is'rāīla

(of) Israel

لَا

lā

Not

تَعْبُدُونَ

taʿbudūna

you will worship

إِلَّا

illā

except

ٱللَّهَ

l-laha

Allah

وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ

wabil-wālidayni

and with [the] parents

إِحْسَانًۭا

iḥ'sānan

(be) good

وَذِى

wadhī

and (with)

ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ

l-qur'bā

relatives

وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ

wal-yatāmā

and [the] orphans

وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ

wal-masākīni

and the needy

وَقُولُوا۟

waqūlū

and speak

لِلنَّاسِ

lilnnāsi

to [the] people

حُسْنًۭا

ḥus'nan

good

وَأَقِيمُوا۟

wa-aqīmū

and establish

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

l-ṣalata

the prayer

وَءَاتُوا۟

waātū

and give

ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

l-zakata

the zakah

ثُمَّ

thumma

Then

تَوَلَّيْتُمْ

tawallaytum

you turned away

إِلَّا

illā

except

قَلِيلًۭا

qalīlan

a few

مِّنكُمْ

minkum

of you

وَأَنتُم

wa-antum

and you (were)

مُّعْرِضُونَ

muʿ'riḍūna

refusing

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

أَخَذْنَا

akhadhnā

We took

مِيثَـٰقَكُمْ

mīthāqakum

your covenant

لَا

lā

Not

تَسْفِكُونَ

tasfikūna

will you shed

دِمَآءَكُمْ

dimāakum

your blood

وَلَا

walā

and not

تُخْرِجُونَ

tukh'rijūna

(will) evict

أَنفُسَكُم

anfusakum

yourselves

مِّن

min

from

دِيَـٰرِكُمْ

diyārikum

your homes

ثُمَّ

thumma

then

أَقْرَرْتُمْ

aqrartum

you ratified

وَأَنتُمْ

wa-antum

while you

تَشْهَدُونَ

tashhadūna

(were) witnessing

ثُمَّ

thumma

Then

أَنتُمْ

antum

you

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

hāulāi

(are) those

تَقْتُلُونَ

taqtulūna

(who) kill

أَنفُسَكُمْ

anfusakum

yourselves

وَتُخْرِجُونَ

watukh'rijūna

and evict

فَرِيقًۭا

farīqan

a party

مِّنكُم

minkum

of you

مِّن

min

from

دِيَـٰرِهِمْ

diyārihim

their homes

تَظَـٰهَرُونَ

taẓāharūna

you support one another

عَلَيْهِم

ʿalayhim

against them

بِٱلْإِثْمِ

bil-ith'mi

in sin

وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ

wal-ʿud'wāni

and [the] transgression

وَإِن

wa-in

And if

يَأْتُوكُمْ

yatūkum

they come to you

أُسَـٰرَىٰ

usārā

(as) captives

تُفَـٰدُوهُمْ

tufādūhum

you ransom them

وَهُوَ

wahuwa

while it

مُحَرَّمٌ

muḥarramun

(was) forbidden

عَلَيْكُمْ

ʿalaykum

to you

إِخْرَاجُهُمْ ۚ

ikh'rājuhum

their eviction

أَفَتُؤْمِنُونَ

afatu'minūna

So do you believe

بِبَعْضِ

bibaʿḍi

in part (of)

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

l-kitābi

the Book

وَتَكْفُرُونَ

watakfurūna

and disbelieve

بِبَعْضٍۢ ۚ

bibaʿḍin

in part

فَمَا

famā

Then what

جَزَآءُ

jazāu

(should be the) recompense

مَن

man

(for the one) who

يَفْعَلُ

yafʿalu

does

ذَٰلِكَ

dhālika

that

مِنكُمْ

minkum

among you

إِلَّا

illā

except

خِزْىٌۭ

khiz'yun

disgrace

فِى

fī

in

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

l-ḥayati

the life

ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ

l-dun'yā

(of) the world

وَيَوْمَ

wayawma

and (on the) Day

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

l-qiyāmati

of [the] Resurrection

يُرَدُّونَ

yuraddūna

they will be sent back

إِلَىٰٓ

ilā

to

أَشَدِّ

ashaddi

(the) most severe

ٱلْعَذَابِ ۗ

l-ʿadhābi

punishment

وَمَا

wamā

And not

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

(is) Allah

بِغَـٰفِلٍ

bighāfilin

unaware

عَمَّا

ʿammā

of what

تَعْمَلُونَ

taʿmalūna

you do

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

ulāika

Those

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

(are) the ones who

ٱشْتَرَوُا۟

ish'tarawū

bought

ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ

l-ḥayata

the life

ٱلدُّنْيَا

l-dun'yā

(of) the world

بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ

bil-ākhirati

for the Hereafter

فَلَا

falā

so not

يُخَفَّفُ

yukhaffafu

will be lightened

عَنْهُمُ

ʿanhumu

for them

ٱلْعَذَابُ

l-ʿadhābu

the punishment

وَلَا

walā

and not

هُمْ

hum

they

يُنصَرُونَ

yunṣarūna

will be helped

وَلَقَدْ

walaqad

And indeed

ءَاتَيْنَا

ātaynā

We gave

مُوسَى

mūsā

Musa

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

l-kitāba

the Book

وَقَفَّيْنَا

waqaffaynā

and We followed up

مِنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِهِۦ

baʿdihi

after him

بِٱلرُّسُلِ ۖ

bil-rusuli

with [the] Messengers

وَءَاتَيْنَا

waātaynā

And We gave

عِيسَى

ʿīsā

Isa

ٱبْنَ

ib'na

(the) son

مَرْيَمَ

maryama

(of) Maryam

ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ

l-bayināti

[the] clear signs

وَأَيَّدْنَـٰهُ

wa-ayyadnāhu

and We supported him

بِرُوحِ

birūḥi

(with)

ٱلْقُدُسِ ۗ

l-qudusi

the Holy Spirit

أَفَكُلَّمَا

afakullamā

Is it (not) so (that) whenever

جَآءَكُمْ

jāakum

came to you

رَسُولٌۢ

rasūlun

a Messenger

بِمَا

bimā

with what

لَا

lā

(does) not

تَهْوَىٰٓ

tahwā

desire

أَنفُسُكُمُ

anfusukumu

yourselves

ٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ

is'takbartum

you acted arrogantly

فَفَرِيقًۭا

fafarīqan

So a party

كَذَّبْتُمْ

kadhabtum

you denied

وَفَرِيقًۭا

wafarīqan

and a party

تَقْتُلُونَ

taqtulūna

you kill(ed)

وَقَالُوا۟

waqālū

And they said

قُلُوبُنَا

qulūbunā

Our hearts

غُلْفٌۢ ۚ

ghul'fun

(are) wrapped

بَل

bal

Nay

لَّعَنَهُمُ

laʿanahumu

has cursed them

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

بِكُفْرِهِمْ

bikuf'rihim

for their disbelief

فَقَلِيلًۭا

faqalīlan

so little

مَّا

mā

(is) what

يُؤْمِنُونَ

yu'minūna

they believe

وَلَمَّا

walammā

And when

جَآءَهُمْ

jāahum

came to them

كِتَـٰبٌۭ

kitābun

a Book

مِّنْ

min

of

عِندِ

ʿindi

from

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

Allah

مُصَدِّقٌۭ

muṣaddiqun

confirming

لِّمَا

limā

what (was)

مَعَهُمْ

maʿahum

with them

وَكَانُوا۟

wakānū

though they used to

مِن

min

from

قَبْلُ

qablu

before

يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ

yastaftiḥūna

(that), pray for victory

عَلَى

ʿalā

over

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

those who

كَفَرُوا۟

kafarū

disbelieved

فَلَمَّا

falammā

then when

جَآءَهُم

jāahum

came to them

مَّا

mā

what

عَرَفُوا۟

ʿarafū

they recognized

كَفَرُوا۟

kafarū

they disbelieved

بِهِۦ ۚ

bihi

in it

فَلَعْنَةُ

falaʿnatu

So (the) curse

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

عَلَى

ʿalā

(is) on

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

l-kāfirīna

the disbelievers

بِئْسَمَا

bi'samā

Evil (is) that

ٱشْتَرَوْا۟

ish'taraw

(for) which they have sold

بِهِۦٓ

bihi

with

أَنفُسَهُمْ

anfusahum

themselves

أَن

an

that

يَكْفُرُوا۟

yakfurū

they disbelieve

بِمَآ

bimā

in what

أَنزَلَ

anzala

has revealed

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

بَغْيًا

baghyan

grudging

أَن

an

that

يُنَزِّلَ

yunazzila

sends down

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

مِن

min

of

فَضْلِهِۦ

faḍlihi

His Grace

عَلَىٰ

ʿalā

on

مَن

man

whom

يَشَآءُ

yashāu

He wills

مِنْ

min

from

عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ

ʿibādihi

His servants

فَبَآءُو

fabāū

So they have drawn (on themselves)

بِغَضَبٍ

bighaḍabin

wrath

عَلَىٰ

ʿalā

upon

غَضَبٍۢ ۚ

ghaḍabin

wrath

وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

walil'kāfirīna

And for the disbelievers

عَذَابٌۭ

ʿadhābun

(is) a punishment

مُّهِينٌۭ

muhīnun

humiliating

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

قِيلَ

qīla

it is said

لَهُمْ

lahum

to them

ءَامِنُوا۟

āminū

Believe

بِمَآ

bimā

in what

أَنزَلَ

anzala

has revealed

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

قَالُوا۟

qālū

they say

نُؤْمِنُ

nu'minu

We believe

بِمَآ

bimā

in what

أُنزِلَ

unzila

was revealed

عَلَيْنَا

ʿalaynā

to us

وَيَكْفُرُونَ

wayakfurūna

And they disbelieve

بِمَا

bimā

in what

وَرَآءَهُۥ

warāahu

(is) besides it

وَهُوَ

wahuwa

while it

ٱلْحَقُّ

l-ḥaqu

(is) the truth

مُصَدِّقًۭا

muṣaddiqan

confirming

لِّمَا

limā

what

مَعَهُمْ ۗ

maʿahum

(is) with them

قُلْ

qul

Say

فَلِمَ

falima

Then why

تَقْتُلُونَ

taqtulūna

(did) you kill

أَنۢبِيَآءَ

anbiyāa

(the) Prophets

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

مِن

min

from

قَبْلُ

qablu

before

إِن

in

if

كُنتُم

kuntum

you were

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

mu'minīna

believers

۞ وَلَقَدْ

walaqad

And indeed

جَآءَكُم

jāakum

came to you

مُّوسَىٰ

mūsā

Musa

بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ

bil-bayināti

with [the] clear signs

ثُمَّ

thumma

then

ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ

ittakhadhtumu

you took

ٱلْعِجْلَ

l-ʿij'la

the calf

مِنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِهِۦ

baʿdihi

after him

وَأَنتُمْ

wa-antum

and you

ظَـٰلِمُونَ

ẓālimūna

(were) wrongdoers

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

أَخَذْنَا

akhadhnā

We took

مِيثَـٰقَكُمْ

mīthāqakum

your covenant

وَرَفَعْنَا

warafaʿnā

and We raised

فَوْقَكُمُ

fawqakumu

over you

ٱلطُّورَ

l-ṭūra

the mount

خُذُوا۟

khudhū

Hold

مَآ

mā

what

ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم

ātaynākum

We gave you

بِقُوَّةٍۢ

biquwwatin

with firmness

وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ ۖ

wa-is'maʿū

and listen

قَالُوا۟

qālū

They said

سَمِعْنَا

samiʿ'nā

We heard

وَعَصَيْنَا

waʿaṣaynā

and we disobeyed

وَأُشْرِبُوا۟

wa-ush'ribū

And they were made to drink

فِى

fī

in

قُلُوبِهِمُ

qulūbihimu

their hearts

ٱلْعِجْلَ

l-ʿij'la

(love of) the calf

بِكُفْرِهِمْ ۚ

bikuf'rihim

because of their disbelief

قُلْ

qul

Say

بِئْسَمَا

bi'samā

Evil (is) that

يَأْمُرُكُم

yamurukum

orders you (to do) it

بِهِۦٓ

bihi

with

إِيمَـٰنُكُمْ

īmānukum

your faith

إِن

in

if

كُنتُم

kuntum

you are

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

mu'minīna

believers

قُلْ

qul

Say

إِن

in

If

كَانَتْ

kānat

is

لَكُمُ

lakumu

for you

ٱلدَّارُ

l-dāru

the home

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ

l-ākhiratu

(of) the Hereafter

عِندَ

ʿinda

with

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

Allah

خَالِصَةًۭ

khāliṣatan

exclusively

مِّن

min

from

دُونِ

dūni

excluding

ٱلنَّاسِ

l-nāsi

the mankind

فَتَمَنَّوُا۟

fatamannawū

then wish

ٱلْمَوْتَ

l-mawta

(for) [the] death

إِن

in

if

كُنتُمْ

kuntum

you are

صَـٰدِقِينَ

ṣādiqīna

truthful

وَلَن

walan

And never (will)

يَتَمَنَّوْهُ

yatamannawhu

they wish for it

أَبَدًۢا

abadan

ever

بِمَا

bimā

because

قَدَّمَتْ

qaddamat

(of what) sent ahead

أَيْدِيهِمْ ۗ

aydīhim

their hands

وَٱللَّهُ

wal-lahu

And Allah

عَلِيمٌۢ

ʿalīmun

(is) All-Knower

بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

bil-ẓālimīna

of the wrongdoers

وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمْ

walatajidannahum

And surely you will find them

أَحْرَصَ

aḥraṣa

(the) most greedy

ٱلنَّاسِ

l-nāsi

(of) [the] mankind

عَلَىٰ

ʿalā

for

حَيَوٰةٍۢ

ḥayatin

life

وَمِنَ

wamina

and (greedier) than

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

those who

أَشْرَكُوا۟ ۚ

ashrakū

associate[d] partners (with Allah)

يَوَدُّ

yawaddu

Loves

أَحَدُهُمْ

aḥaduhum

(each) one of them

لَوْ

law

if

يُعَمَّرُ

yuʿammaru

he could be granted a life

أَلْفَ

alfa

(of) a thousand

سَنَةٍۢ

sanatin

year(s)

وَمَا

wamā

But not

هُوَ

huwa

it

بِمُزَحْزِحِهِۦ

bimuzaḥziḥihi

(will) remove him

مِنَ

mina

from

ٱلْعَذَابِ

l-ʿadhābi

the punishment

أَن

an

that

يُعَمَّرَ ۗ

yuʿammara

he should be granted life

وَٱللَّهُ

wal-lahu

And Allah

بَصِيرٌۢ

baṣīrun

(is) All-Seer

بِمَا

bimā

of what

يَعْمَلُونَ

yaʿmalūna

they do

قُلْ

qul

Say

مَن

man

Whoever

كَانَ

kāna

is

عَدُوًّۭا

ʿaduwwan

an enemy

لِّجِبْرِيلَ

lijib'rīla

to Jibreel

فَإِنَّهُۥ

fa-innahu

then indeed he

نَزَّلَهُۥ

nazzalahu

brought it down

عَلَىٰ

ʿalā

on

قَلْبِكَ

qalbika

your heart

بِإِذْنِ

bi-idh'ni

by (the) permission

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

مُصَدِّقًۭا

muṣaddiqan

confirming

لِّمَا

limā

what

بَيْنَ

bayna

(was)

يَدَيْهِ

yadayhi

before it

وَهُدًۭى

wahudan

and a guidance

وَبُشْرَىٰ

wabush'rā

and glad tiding(s)

لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

lil'mu'minīna

for the believers

مَن

man

Whoever

كَانَ

kāna

is

عَدُوًّۭا

ʿaduwwan

an enemy

لِّلَّهِ

lillahi

(to) Allah

وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتِهِۦ

wamalāikatihi

and His Angels

وَرُسُلِهِۦ

warusulihi

and His Messengers

وَجِبْرِيلَ

wajib'rīla

and Jibreel

وَمِيكَىٰلَ

wamīkāla

and Meekael

فَإِنَّ

fa-inna

then indeed

ٱللَّهَ

l-laha

Allah

عَدُوٌّۭ

ʿaduwwun

(is) an enemy

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

lil'kāfirīna

to the disbelievers

وَلَقَدْ

walaqad

And indeed

أَنزَلْنَآ

anzalnā

We revealed

إِلَيْكَ

ilayka

to you

ءَايَـٰتٍۭ

āyātin

Verses

بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ ۖ

bayyinātin

clear

وَمَا

wamā

and not

يَكْفُرُ

yakfuru

disbelieves

بِهَآ

bihā

in them

إِلَّا

illā

except

ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

l-fāsiqūna

the defiantly disobedient

أَوَكُلَّمَا

awakullamā

And is (it not that) whenever

عَـٰهَدُوا۟

ʿāhadū

they took

عَهْدًۭا

ʿahdan

a covenant

نَّبَذَهُۥ

nabadhahu

threw it away

فَرِيقٌۭ

farīqun

a party

مِّنْهُم ۚ

min'hum

of them

بَلْ

bal

Nay

أَكْثَرُهُمْ

aktharuhum

most of them

لَا

lā

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ
